Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana has suffered a hamstring injury and has pulled out of the France squad for the upcoming international games.

Fofana had received his first call-up for Les Bleus but has suffered an injury that will prevent him from playing.

He had to go off in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Everton yesterday and was replaced by Nathaniel Chalobah.

The defender will be disappointed at the timing of the injury as he was getting into form after a lengthy absence.

Fofana suffered an injury in Chelsea’s first-leg win over AC Milan in the Champions League group stage in October.

The former Saint-Etienne man only returned to action weeks ago. He will be unhappy to be on the sidelines again following his big-money move from Leicester City last summer.

Fofana had joined Chelsea in a £69.2 million move as the Blues sought to add the hard-tackling defender to their rearguard.

However, Fofana has struggled with injuries and adaptation. The former has interrupted his continuity, making it difficult for him. When he was getting into his groove, he suffered another injury.

France head coach Didier Deschamps has replaced Fofana with OGC Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo.

The 23-year-old former Barcelona man recently expressed disappointment about not receiving a call-up, but now he has his chance.

Deschamps recently had to debunk rumours that he called up Fofana to prevent him from joining Ivory Coast.

France face 2024 European Championship qualifiers at home to the Netherlands on Friday, before visiting Ireland three days later.
