Dutch defender Dominique Janssen says that teammate Aniek Nouwen has a big future in the game.

The 23-year-old Chelsea defender made her return from injury as The Netherlands defeated Switzerland 4-1 in their final UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 group game to set up a quarter-final tie against France. Nouwen played 64 minutes of the match before being replaced by Kerstin Casparij.

Nouwen is playing at her first major international tournament at senior level after making the breakthrough into the Dutch squad in 2019. Teammate Janssen spoke with FAWSL Full-Time after this evening’s match and she said that the youngster has a big future ahead of her.

“It was nice for her to come back so quickly,” Janssen said. “She’s young and I am curious to see how she is going to develop. It is good that she is there, she’s strong, she’s fast and she’s good at doing certain things.

“I don’t think today was her best game but she is young and she has a big future ahead of her.”

Nouwen is one of 10 members of the Dutch squad who is aged 23 of under. Janssen went on to say that the future looks bright for The Orange Lionesses.

She said “Mark (Parsons) has made sure that he has freshened up the team with some younger players. They need the experience to improve, to grow and to understand what is needed at this level. It is good for them to get that experience with this team and I think that there is a big future for The Netherlands.”

The Netherlands’ quarter-final tie against France takes place at The AESSEAL New York Stadium in Rotherham on Saturday evening.
