Chelsea have retained the Vitality Women’s FA Cup after beating Manchester City 3-2 after extra-time in this season’s final at Wembley Stadium.

The two sides battled out an exciting 2-2 draw in normal time before Sam Kerr popped up with the winning goal in the first half of extra-time as Chelsea went on to lift the trophy once again in-front of a record crowd of 49,094.

Manchester City started the stronger of the two sides at the national stadium and Caroline Weir fired wide from a good position after two minutes before the Scot drilled another effort off target after Lauren Hemp’s initial shot was blocked.

At the other end, Chelsea thought that they had the lead from their first meaningful attack of the game, however, Kerr strayed offside when meeting a long pass before going on to slot the ball into an unguarded net.

The Australian international didn’t have to wait too long for her big moment. She got her head on a Millie Bright cross just after the half-hour mark to give Chelsea the lead.

Manchester City’s response to going behind was swift. Hemp found herself with space on the left before cutting in and expertly looping her shot into the far corner of the Chelsea net to level matters for her side.

The Cityzens pursued the lead at the start of the second half and Hemp looked certain to score in the 49th minute only for Bright to bravely put her body on the line and block the shot.

Chelsea regained the lead just after the hour when Erin Cuthbert found the ball at her feet 20 yards out and she crashed her effort home via the crossbar.

Emma Hayes’ side looked to have the trophy in the bag until Manchester City substitute Raso beat off her marker to fire home the equaliser two minutes from the end of normal time.

Manchester City went close to taking the lead in the first half of extra-time but Weir’s dangerous cross was intercepted by Jess Carter with Ellen White lurking behind. Chelsea then went up the other end and took the lead for a third time, Kerr racing away and firing the ball into the net via the leg of Manchester City defender Alex Greenwood.

The Cityzens chased a third equaliser in the second half of extra-time but they could only muster half-chances with Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger left untroubled as The Blues finally hung on for the win.

Chelsea end the campaign as double winners with the South West Londoners also retaining the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title.
