Chelsea crowned WSL champions on final day of the season against Reading | OneFootball

Chelsea have been crowned champions of the Women’s Super League for the fourth successive season.

Emma Hayes’ side beat out bottom of the table Reading to secure their sixth league title, while also cementing the Royals’ relegation fate. Bagging 65 goals while conceding just 15, the Blues have enjoyed a formidable campaign.

With plenty of expectation resting on the team, Chelsea’s season began with a shock 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Liverpool. Despite the loss, the champions quickly turned their season around embarking on a 21-game unbeaten streak. Chelsea suffered just one other league defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

With just two losses and one draw, the Blues ended their season on 58 points, four clear of rivals Manchester United, who pushed them right to the very end.

The title marks Chelsea’s third successive domestic double, with Hayes’ side claiming the FA Cup during a tightly fought contest at Wembley earlier in May.

Despite suffering injuries to key players, the Blues have been able to maintain a consistently high standard throughout the campaign. Next season will see Chelsea compete for potentially four pieces of silverware as the club feature in the Champions league for the seventh successive year.

Reading vs Chelsea — How it went

Following an almost entirely one-sided opening 20 minutes, it was no surprise that the visitors were the first to find the back of the net.

Sam Kerr’s goal came from a beautifully placed cross from Guro Reiten, which the Australian headed home to put the Blues into the lead. As half time approached it would be the Norweigan to double the visitors lead. Putting the ball beyond Grace Moloney the No.11 sent Hayes’ side in two goals ahead at the half.

After the break, Chelsea had a much quieter spell but a second from Kerr ensured the Blues would be taking home to trophy once again.
