It’s been well established that Chelsea want to sign a left winger as well as a striker this summer, and it looks likely it could be Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.
CaughtOffside today report that the England youth international has asked to leave Dortmund this summer, with both Liverpool and Chelsea keen on signing him should he leave. Their piece claims that Gittens is “no longer happy in Dortmund,” and that there is a “growing expectation” that he could leave in the summer.
While his form has tailed off a little of late, he’s still had a very impressive season overall, totalling 12 goals and 3 assists in total. He’s played in a number of positions, but is more effective in cutting in from the left.

Gittens fits many parts of Chelsea’s player trading model, if they can get him at the right price. He’s young, home grown, hungry, and wouldn’t demand crazy wages. The question is what he can bring to us that Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke and Jadon Sancho don’t already.
The 20 year old certainly has huge potential, but we can’t say we’re not at least a little spooked by the cautionary tale of Jadon Sancho. He was achieving far greater things at Dortmund in his time there than Gittens is doing, and we all know how that ended up for him.
If Chelsea can get an early deal wrapped up for a striker like Liam Delap, we can see them really digging deep into this one an trying to squeeze Dortmund right up until the finish line. If we see him more as a bonus than a necessity, we can bide our time and see if he really kicks up a fuss.
