Chelsea target Milan Skriniar may be the “ideal replacement” for Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Rudiger has left Chelsea after five years at the club to join Real Madrid, and Thomas Tuchel is now looking to find players who could strengthen his back line.

What’s the latest news involving Skriniar?

Chelsea also recently confirmed the departure of Andreas Christensen, with his contract expiring at the end of the month, so reinforcements are badly needed.

Inter Milan’s Skriniar has emerged as a potential option for the Blues, with Gazzetta dello Sport claiming that the Premier League outfit would be willing to offer Ruben Loftus-Cheek as a makeweight in any deal.

The £43m-rated defender is also attracting interest from French champions PSG, indicating that it will be far from straightforward for Chelsea to get their man.

What has O’Rourke said about Skriniar?

O’Rourke has been impressed by what Skriniar has achieved during his time at Inter, and he feels that the Slovakian centre-back could flourish in England.

Giving his verdict on the 27-year-old, O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “Another top centre-back, Skriniar, who’s done very well for Inter Milan over the last couple of seasons, helping them challenge for the title and impress in the Champions League as well.

“We all know Chelsea have got issues at centre-back with Rudiger and Christensen leaving, so getting Skriniar in, he could be the ideal replacement for Rudiger. He’s a tough, physical defender so it looks like he could suit the Premier League.”

Is Skriniar good enough to fill the void left behind by Rudiger?

Ever since Tuchel took charge at Stamford Bridge in January 2021, Rudiger has been a colossal figure at the back for Chelsea, and he played a crucial role in their Champions League triumph last year.

Now that he has moved on, it is going to be very difficult to replace him.

However, Skriniar may be the man for the job. He won Serie A with Inter in 2020/21, and ensured that his side had the best defensive record in the league as they conceded just 35 goals under Antonio Conte.

Inter were unable to defend their crown last term, but Skriniar still had a fine campaign, ranking in the top two for his team when it came to blocks and clearances per match, according to WhoScored.

His combative style of play is similar to Rudiger’s, and at 27, he ought to be entering his prime, meaning that he could be an exceptional signing for Chelsea if they can convince him to move to west London.
