Chelsea could sell Mateo Kovacic as they look to bring in cash to balance their insane spending in the last 12 months.

The Blues spent a Premier League record sum on Enzo Fernandez in January, and have mainly partnered him with Kovacic so far.

But the need to sign a more defensively minded player is obvious, and according to Nizaar Kinsella’s piece in the Evening Standard today, that can’t happen unless the Blues raise serious funds. The piece suggests interest from Pep Guardiola at Man City, as well as the newly appointed Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

The fact that the Croatian international has just 16 months left on his current deal means that this summer is the last chance to sell him for any decent sum. The 28 year old has been Graham Potter’s captain in recent weeks, and losing him would weaken the squad without question – but these as just the consequences of our big spending, unfortunately.
