Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy on a five-year contract.
Mendy was one of the very best shot-stoppers in Ligue 1 last term and joins the west London side for a reported fee of £20m.
“As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in,” said Blues director Marina Granovskaia.
“Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club.”
The move could well signal the end of Kepa Arrizabalaga’s time as Chelsea number one, despite having only joined the Blues two years ago for a world record £70m.
The Spaniard has since made a number of high profile errors, most recently against Liverpool last weekend.
