Chelsea considering two sales of academy players that would be very unpopular with fans

Nizaar Kinsella’s piece on Chelsea’s squad status today has some eyebrow raising sections.

In particular, we’re surprised to see him mention Conor Gallagher and Ian Maatsen as among those players who could be sold. The former has long been listen as a valuable asset which the club could choose to cash in on, but the latter seemed to have secured his place with some flashy preseason showings.

The idea of losing Gallagher would be very unpopular, but you could understand it given the crowded central midfield that’s suddenly been created by the signings of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, adding to the cluster of teenage talents backing them up.

But the sale of Maatsen would be perhaps even more controversial, given he’s so versatile and talented and can play in wide positions where we’re lacking depth. He’s had a great breakout season at the top of the Championship, an impressive preseason under Mauricio Pochettino in the USA – are we really going to flog him now? It would seem a crazy move.
