Chelsea have announced the arrival of highly rated defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax on a long-term contract until 2032.
The 19-year-old moves to Stamford Bridge after a €43 million deal was struck with Ajax, who were initially holding out for €60m.
“I’m very excited, I’m so happy to be here,” Hato told Chelseafc.com.
“I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that, so I’m very happy.”
Hato is capable of filling in at both centre-back and left-back. He will provide cover for Marc Cucurella, who made nearly 70 appearances for club and country across all competitions last season.
Beyond his defensive talents, Hato is also known for his composure on the ball and ability to play out from the back, which suits Chelsea’s evolving style under manager Enzo Maresca.
Hato’s signing continues a flurry of summer transfer activity for Chelsea, who have already signed Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
They have also welcomed Willian Estevao, Dario Essugo and Kendry Paez from previously agreed deals.
Chelsea are far from done in the market, as they remain in advanced talks with RB Leipzig over a deal for Xavi Simons.
They are also expected to make a move for Alejandro Garnacho, but only after a large chunk of their business on the outgoing front has been completed.
