Chelsea have completed the signing of Spanish international defender Alejandra Bernabé on a three-year deal from Atlético Madrid.

The Blues announced news of the transfer this afternoon via a post on their official club website.

Bernabé has spent the last four years with Atlético Madrid, coming through the club’s reserve ranks before featuring for the first team. The player has spent time out on loan at Eibar and Real Sociedad in the last two seasons. Bernabé has plenty of experience under her belt having played Spanish finetwork Liga F football for the last four seasons. She has also played a small number of matches in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The 21-year-old is very much one for the future at new club Chelsea. The next step of Bernabé’s development will see her go back out on loan with the player re-joining Real Sociedad for the 2023/2024 campaign.

After completing her move to Chelsea, Bernabé said “I am so happy to be here and I’m grateful for the opportunity that Chelsea have given to me. I’m so excited because it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Bernabé is Chelsea manager Emma Hayes’ fourth new signing of the summer transfer window. The Blues boss has also added goalkeeper Nicky Evrard and midfielders Sjoeke Nüsken and Catarina Macario to her squad.
