Chelsea have just announced the signing of Marc Guiu from Barcelona.

It follows a week of rumours about a potential move, with things moving very quickly once a deal was agreed.

In a statement on the official website, the club announced that the striker had signed a 5 year deal, with a one year club option to extend that further. He will join up with his new teammates shortly for preseason.

“It’s an immense joy to sign for Chelsea and I struggled to sleep ahead of the journey here because I was so excited,” the 18 year old said in quotes featured in the club’s statement.

“Ever since I was small, it was my dream to play in the Premier League. Now I have the opportunity to come here to Chelsea and I will work my hardest to be successful for the club.”

Guiu certainly has the style and physique to potentially dominate this league. He’s very physically developed for a player of his age, and a season working hard in the gym will help that further. He’s already played some minutes for Barcelona’s first team, so he’s not nearly as raw as some of the teenagers we’ve signed in recent years.

Guiu’s short term future still unsure

It’s still not clear what the plan for Guiu’s short term future is. There was talk about a loan to Seville, which since seems to have gone quiet. It’s not yet clear whether the plan is for him to spend a season back in Spain on loan (which would use up a precious foreign loan slot), go elsewhere in England or to just make up part of the first team squad.

If we don’t sign another forward, he could easily be third choice behind Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku. If we sign another striker, that surely means Guiu is going somewhere else to play this season.
