The Blues are reconsidering their transfer strategy after they were rocked by the loss of Fofana, who has ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament.

The French defender is expected to miss the majority of next season, if not all of it, and Chalobah now looks set to stay at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had been willing to offload Chalobah, but Mauricio Pochettino does not want his centre-back options further depleted, with Benoit Badiashile also set to miss the start of the season through injury.

Pochettino, who takes charge of his first game tonight when Chelsea play Wrexham here, says Chelsea will also consider entering the transfer market for a new centre-back.

“It’s really sad, really bad news,” said Pochettino. “We feel all so sad. All we can do is help him. After that, because he is a player that is important for the team and the squad.

"Of course we now need to think and see if we keep as we are, or if we need to work to maybe add some players.”
