Chelsea caught “trying to play perfect football” says Rio after double blunder

Rio Ferdinand was on punditry duty for Chelsea against West Ham yesterday, and as the defensive expert on the panel he was asked about the horror show at the back that lead to the Hammers’ first equaliser.

Jorginho sent a sloppy, under-hit pass back from midfield, Edouard Mendy made it to the ball but then tried to take a touch, lost the ball and then brought down Jarrod Bowen with an ugly tackle to give away an obvious penalty.

Asked who was at fault, Rio was in little doubt.

“Mostly [the blame is] with the goalkeeper, he has plenty of opportunity to clear this,” Ferdinand said in quotes picked up by Football365.

“Jorginho leaves the short pass, yes it is short but the goalkeeper gets there. Clear it straight away.

“He gets another chance to clear it and takes another touch then all of a sudden its panic stations and he gives away a penalty.

“Instead of taking that touch, give a throw in away. The problem is he has been caught trying to play perfect football. In those situations, it’s not about that.”

In the end, there’s not too much point playing the blame game. It was a horrible moment all round, both players were at fault to some degree, but Chelsea regrouped and took the lead again.

The real problem was that they conceded twice after that.
