Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said that she was happy with the three points and being top of the group but not so pleased with her side’s performance after last night’s 1-0 UEFA Women’s Champions League victory over Servette FCCF at Kingsmeadow.

Sam Kerr’s second half goal was enough to separate the two sides in a game which was far from entertaining by Chelsea’s standards.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Blues boss Hayes had little to say about the game. She was pleased with the result but admitted that her side were a long way from their best.

“We got three points, we got a clean sheet, we are top of the group,” Hayes said. “The first half was nowhere near our standards, I think it improved second half but fair play to Servette, I thought that they made it difficult for us, they had a lot of bodies behind the ball and they were aggressive.

“I think that the time it took us to get into the game, our best chances came late on and perhaps the scoreline should have been a little more but Zećira Mušović made a great save to keep us in it.

“I’m happy with the three points but I’m not overwhelmed with the performance.”

Despite the fact that Chelsea had beaten Servette 7-0 in the reverse fixture last week, Hayes went on to say that she was unsurprised by the Swiss side’s improved showing at Kingsmeadow.

She said “The Champions League is full of top teams from their respective countries so we shouldn’t be surprised. I think when you win by such a large margin like we did last time, perhaps that can happen. No two games are the same, I think that should serve as a reminder to us when you play an opponent twice so close together, I felt that at the weekend (against Chelsea).

“We should be winning these games, they’re a part-time team, it is something that we should expect of ourselves if we are going to progress in the competition. We have won it, we haven’t been at our best but we focus on the positives and go from there.”

Chelsea now turn their attentions to Sunday’s home fixture against managerless Birmingham City in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
