Chelsea are continuing to explore the possibility of signing Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Thomas Tuchel has overseen a busy transfer window at Stamford Bridge but could still bolster his side further ahead of the September 1 deadline.

What is the latest on Aubameyang?

After Romelu Lukaku returned to Inter Milan on loan this summer, Chelsea have been left without a recognised number nine in west London.

A report from Sky Sports last week indicated that the Blues were ready to swoop for Aubameyang, and teammate Frenkie De Jong, if Barcelona allowed the duo to leave the Camp Nou this summer.

Aubameyang left Arsenal for the Catalan giants during the January transfer window after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. He went on to score 13 times in 24 appearances for his new club.

However, the Sun have reported that Manchester United are also in the race for the 33-year-old.

According to reports in Spain, Barcelona will demand around £21 million for Aubameyang’s signature.

What has Romano said on the move?

Romano understands that Chelsea are continuing to explore a move for Aubameyang, although no official bid has been launched just yet.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m told at the moment, there is still no bid from Chelsea, but they are exploring this possibility by understanding the conditions like the salary, and, of course, the price tag.”

Would Aubameyang be a good signing for Chelsea?

The Gabon international has an impressive record when it comes to finding the back of the net, bagging 329 times across his professional career for club and country. He has made 73 appearances for Gabon.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp knows Aubameyang all too well from his time as Borussia Dortmund manager and piled on the praise ahead of a clash with Arsenal three years ago.

“I didn’t think abut the Premier League when I signed him for Dortmund,” he said in a press conference. “He played as a winger at Saint-Etienne at that time, we needed a number nine because [Robert] Lewandowski left us. We thought long about it, then he came in and played on the wing and we played with [Ciro] Immobile as well.

“Later on we realised he is a really good central striker, a number nine, as well. It was not immediate like this, he developed incredibly and became a goal machine.”
