Chelsea could be enticed by the prospect of bringing Pep Guardiola to Stamford Bridge, should the opportunity arise amid the growing chaos at Manchester City, journalist Simon Phillips told GIVEMESPORT.

City were recently charged with over 100 breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations, with some speculating Guardiola’s future might be in doubt.

Earlier this week, the odds on Guardiola being the next Premier League manager to leave his post were slashed, with some bookmakers pricing the Catalan at 9/2 to depart City.

It comes amid a period of turbulence at the Manchester-based outfit, after City were charged by the Premier League for breaches of their financial rules.

Potential punishments for City range from a small fine to potential expulsion from the Premier League itself (Sky Sports).

What has Simon Phillips said about Guardiola joining Chelsea?

While recognising the chances were slim, journalist Phillips did claim the Chelsea board would jump at the chance to hire Guardiola, should he become available.

On the 52-year-old manager, Phillips said: “If Pep Guardiola became available, that's someone I could see the Chelsea owners being like, well, hang on, this is an opportunity we should probably try and get him in whatever the circumstances are.

“Because how many times are you going to get a chance to get a manager like Pep. Obviously, this is me speculating.

“But I think if Pep became available, I could see Chelsea's heads being turned by that.”

Will Guardiola leave City for Chelsea?

In truth, it’s unlikely. During an interview in November 2021, Guardiola all but ruled out the prospect of ever managing another Premier League side other than City, instead suggesting his next move would likely be to international football (Sky Sports).

On the back of the recent charges against City, Guardiola told reporters that he wasn't leaving the club, insisting "now more than ever" he was willing to stay.

What’s more, there are also rumours it could take years for the Premier League’s independent panel to reach a verdict on the charges, indicating Guardiola’s contract, which is currently set to run until the end of the 2024/25 season, may have already expired.

With that in mind, the chances of Guardiola ditching City for a move to one of their Premier League rivals remains slim.

However, for as long as a cloud of uncertainty continues to hang over City moving forward, Guardiola to Chelsea remains a possibility, albeit a slim one.
