Chelsea have formally requested that the Premier League allows clubs to name nine players on the bench until the end of the season.

The proposal will be discussed at a meeting on Thursday, the Daily Mail have revealed.

Plans are already in place to allow five substitutions per team per match, rather than the usual three, though that still needs to be finalised. The Bundesliga has already implemented that particular increase since returning last month.

Now, Chelsea want to see another change made.

According to the report, the Blues want the number of subs a team is allowed to name to increase from seven to nine. That particular change was already made in the Bundesliga before the start of the 2019/20 season.

The increase to the number of subs each team is allowed to make has been ratified by FIFA as a result of the coronavirus and its impact on football.

Clubs are fearful of being hit by injuries, especially as they are set to be forced to play two games a week to complete the 2019/20 season after the enforced three month break.
