Ben Jacobs was on the London is Blue podcast this week, where he spoke about the transfer window that the Blues have had so far.

There haven’t been any mega deals, but we’ve ticked through quite a few smaller ones – Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Omari Kellyman have all been added already. Jacobs thinks there’s plenty more to come however:

“Chelsea are in for a giant summer, and they’re about halfway there, in my view,” he said on the podcast.

“So it’s about £85m spent, and £85m brought in, which means the the net spend is on track. Club sources say they’re ‘comfortable’ as far as the last financial year is concerned.”

He added that there were still two main concerns in terms of positions to be strengthened – a right sided winger and an “experienced or proven centre forward.”

He describes the business so far as “opportunistic,” and pointed to deals like the one that brought in Kellyman as a perfect example of that. Aston Villa were in FFP trouble, and were forced to accept Chelsea’s £19m offer as it was simply too good to turn down. He points out that this was the Blues using their superior financial situation to “strongarm” other clubs into making deals they didn’t really want to.

What comes next for ambitious Blues

Jacobs is right to point to the net spend aspect. That’s clearly something that matters a lot at the moment, and that means we can expect more sales in the weeks to come. Having a “giant” summer means movements out as well as in, and we expect some pretty painful losses as well as interesting additions as the summer rolls on.

The obvious one is Conor Gallagher, but Trevoh Chalobah and even Carney Chukwuemeka could be on the way out too.
