Manchester City and Chelsea have reportedly launched negotiations over Mateo Kovacic’s switch to the Etihad Stadium.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Cityzens held talks with the player’s entourage in the last few days.

Following an embarrassing season, Chelsea will undergo significant changes this summer, with newly-appointed manager Mauricio Pochettino keen on overhauling his midfield options.

The Blues are reportedly open to selling Kovacic, who was one of the few decent performers in 2022/23, in part due to his contractual situation at Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old is about to enter the final 12 months of his deal in west London, so time’s running out for the Blues to cash in on his inevitable departure.

Given Kovacic’s impressive technical and tactical qualities, coupled with his vast experience in European competitions, it’s no wonder Pep Guardiola wants to see him at the Etihad.

The Croatia international has also emerged as a potential transfer target for Manchester United.

However, after Man City accelerated their effort to beat their cross-city rivals to Kovacic’s signature, Erik ten Hag may have to look elsewhere for much-needed midfield reinforcements.

The first round of talks was reportedly ‘positive,’ with the parties expected to meet again soon to finalise the deal that could confirm Ilkay Gundogan’s exit.

Heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the past few months, the Man City captain could leave the club after seven years upon the expiry of his contract at the end of next month.

In addition to the Catalan powerhouse, Premier League runners-up Arsenal have recently joined the race to sign the 32-year-old as Mikel Arteta hopes to bolster his midfield options in the summer.
