Chelsea ace Sam Kerr has been recognised by Council for the Order of Australia following her goalscoring exploits for her country.

Kerr became the all-time record international goalscorer for Australia last week, beating Tim Cahill’s record of 50 goals for the nation. The forward scored five goals in The Commonwealth Bank Matildas’ 18-0 victory over Indonesia at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 as she took her personal goal tally to 54.

Football Media Australia have this evening issued an official press release confirming that Kerr has received recognition from the Order of Australia for her achievements for her national team. She has been awarded the Order of Australia medal for services to football.

After learning of her award, Kerr said “I think the OAM (Order of Australia medal) is right up there as one of the biggest achievements for me, it is an amazing honour.

“Being recognised for doing what you love is an amazing honour but to do it outside of the sporting world is special.

“There is so much more that I still want to achieve. I want to win more trophies with my club and with the Matildas. I want to help to continue to grow the game and reach different people in different walks of life and I feel that I have the opportunity to do that in Australia.”

Kerr’s Order of Australia medal comes off the back of the player being named as a finalist for world football’s top prizes, The FIFA Best Women’s Player and the Ballon d’Or.
