Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is still suffering from an injury, which forced him to withdraw from international duty with Senegal, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The £52,000 per-week star missed Graham Potter’s first game in charge last week and Phillips reckons that he’s doubtful to face Crystal Palace when the Blues return to action next weekend.

What’s the latest news involving Mendy?

Mendy has been ever-present for Chelsea in the Premier League, playing the full 90 minutes in each of their six league fixtures.

But the shotstopper suffered a knee injury late on in the draw with West Ham earlier this month, which forced him to sit out the Champions League ties with Dinamo Zagreb and RB Salzburg.

Mendy was at least on the bench in the opener, but he was left out entirely for the 1-1 draw with the Austrian outfit at Stamford Bridge in the Blues’ most recent outing.

Phillips revealed that Mendy had somewhat recovered, which allowed him to report for international duty with Senegal, but he’s now back at Cobham following a recent setback.

What did Phillips say about Mendy?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Looking at the injury, initially it wasn’t serious, but it’s continuing to aggravate him. So, he wasn’t fit enough to play for Senegal so he is back at Chelsea, and they will assess him. But at the moment, he’s doubtful for the Crystal Palace game.”

How has Mendy performed this season?

Since replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga in the side around two years ago, Mendy has gone from strength to strength between the sticks, winning the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup along the way.

But for the first time in his Chelsea career, Mendy is going through a rough patch and has been making some uncharacteristic mistakes in recent games.

Mendy’s standout bad moment came when he gifted Leeds the opener during the 3-0 defeat at Elland Road last month when he was virtually tackled a couple of yards out by Brenden Aaronson.

He also needed an extremely controversial VAR decision to spare his blushes against West Ham earlier this month after he could only parry a loose ball late on, allowing Maxwel Cornet to slam home, only for the goal to fortunately be ruled out for an early foul by Jarrod Bowen on the Chelsea keeper.
