Chelsea could be boosted in their bid to appoint a new sporting director as Paul Mitchell is ‘very keen on the role’ at Stamford Bridge, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

Todd Boehly, who led a £4.25billion takeover of the Blues in May, has set his sights on filling the behind-the-scenes role.

It is understood that Boehly is looking to fill the sporting director role ahead of the World Cup, which gets underway in Qatar next month, and head coach Graham Potter has been involved in the process of finding the right candidate.

Jacobs has revealed that Mitchell ‘really wants the job’ in west London despite only taking on a similar job at Monaco last year.

Although the 41-year-old has attempted to play down the links to Chelsea, he admitted ‘it is always good to be linked to clubs of this calibre’.

Mitchell has previously held behind-the-scenes roles at numerous clubs including Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig.

During his time with Spurs, he was credited with the arrivals of Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min in the capital.

Jacobs understands that Mitchell is eager to secure the sporting director job at Chelsea as Boehly ups the ante in his pursuit of an appointment.

The journalist believes the Blues would not have to overcome obstacles to lure him away from Monaco.

Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT: "There's Paul Mitchell, at Monaco, who is very keen on the role.

"It wouldn't be hard for him to leave the Monaco board in order to take it."

Would Mitchell be a good appointment by Boehly?

Boehly has revealed that he wants to build a multi-club model after taking over at Chelsea, meaning they could follow in the footsteps of Red Bull and Manchester City.

With that being the case, appointing Mitchell would make sense as he has worked for three clubs owned by Red Bull - Leipzig, New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Bragantino.

Boehly has already attempted to go down that route as he opened talks over personal terms with Christoph Freund, who is currently working backstage at Salzburg.

But Freund confirmed he would be staying with the Austrian outfit despite initially entertaining a switch to Chelsea, so the Blues have been forced to head back to the drawing board and Mitchell could be a shrewd addition ahead of the January transfer window.
