Things rarely seem to go smoothly for Charlton Athletic these days.
After manager Lee Bowyer eventually signed a new contract the day after he appeared set to leave the club a couple of weeks back, the Addicks have now begun preparing for their first season back in the Championship.
But their pre-season schedule got off to an inauspicious start when they took on Romanian side Gaz Metan Mediaș in Málaga on Thursday.
Everything was going smoothly until the referee awarded Charlton a penalty outside the box.
Two of the MediaČ™ players are then alleged to have been sent off for manhandling the referee while objecting to the decision and though Charlton agreed to let substitutes come on in their place, the referee did not and the game was abandoned.
Addicks boss Bowyer – who was once sent off for fighting with his own team-mate while playing for Newcastle – described the incident as “disappointing”.
What a club.
