FLW takes a look at the five worst Charlton Athletic managers based on points-per-game.

Charlton Athletic have made a number of disappointing managerial appointments in recent times, and some of them rank among the worst in the history of the club.

As per data from Transfermarkt.com, there are several managers who have been in charge at The Valley and did not have an impressive points-per-game record during their time at the club.

Transfermarkt.com has not recorded all of Lennie Lawrence, Frank Hill or Jimmy Trotter's games in charge, so it would be unfair to include them on the list despite the data suggesting that they would appear in the top five.

The fact that Les Reed managed just eight games before he was sacked in 2006 is the only reason he does not feature on this list, with his PPG record of 0.50 making him one of the least successful permanent managers to ever be in the dugout in SE7.

Alan Pardew took charge of more games than a few of the managers on the list, so he just misses out despite having the same PPG record as three of the names that feature.

Let's take a look at the five worst Charlton Athletic managers that took charge of at least ten matches, according to their PPG.

5 Michael Appleton

Michael Appleton was appointed as Charlton manager to replace Dean Holden, after the latter became the first managerial casualty in the EFL a few weeks into the 2023/24 season.

His PPG record of 1.21 from 28 games in charge means that he features as one of the top five worst Charlton managers ever, and despite showing some initial promise in the dugout, it soon faded into frustration from the terraces at The Valley.

After an encouraging start to the 2014/15 season, Charlton endured a run of poor results that saw Bob Peeters be relieved of his duties after just 28 games in charge at The Valley.

The Belgian's PPG record of 1.21 ranks him alongside Appleton, Pardew, and Iain Dowie - he is not fondly remembered at the London club whatsoever.

3 Iain Dowie

Iain Dowie was sacked by Charlton in November 2006, with a PPG record of 1.21 from his 14 games in charge of the Premier League club.

He was appointed by Coventry City, Queens Park Rangers and Hull City following his departure from The Valley, but he never enjoyed success at any of the clubs he managed.

Dowie's short spell in the dugout contributed to the Addicks' relegation to the Championship in 2007, and they have not returned to the top flight since.

2 Jose Riga

Jose Riga kept Charlton in the Championship with an impressive run of results at the end of the 2013/14 season, but his second spell in charge during the 2015/16 campaign means he features on this list.

He averaged just 1.00 PPG as he attempted to keep the Addicks in the second tier once again, before leaving the club at the end of the season after they were relegated to League One.

Karel Fraeye was sacked as interim manager after Charlton suffered a 5-0 away defeat against Huddersfield Town in 2016.

He had accumulated an average of just 0.71 PPG from his 14 games at the helm, making him the worst Charlton manager ever to have taken charge of at least 10 games, as per Transfermarkt.com.

A lengthy caretaker he was, but he did nothing to suggest he would be a good permanent fix for the club, and he had little success at the likes of Lommel and Roselaere following his time at Charlton.
