Asmir Begovic was of interest to Charlton Athletic at the start of this summer transfer window.
Former QPR goalkeeper Asmir Begovic emerged on the radar of Charlton Athletic earlier in this transfer window.
That is according to South London Press journalist Richard Cawley, who states that the 37-year-old was a player of interest to the League One side at the start of the summer, but it remains unclear if that is still the case.
It has been a busy start to the summer for the Addicks, with Nathan Jones bringing seven new faces to the club.
Some of the arrivals include League One experience in the form of Matty Godden, Alex Mitchell, Greg Docherty, and Will Mannion, with the latter being a goalkeeper.
Jones arrived at the club midway through last season, so this transfer window has been his first real chance of changing things at the club, and he will hope it has a positive impact as Charlton tries to return to the second tier.
Begovic is currently without a club after leaving QPR at the end of last season, after just a single season.
The 37-year-old joined the R's last summer on a free transfer after leaving Everton, and now the experienced former Premier League goalkeeper finds himself searching for a new club once again.
It was reported earlier in the window that teams such as Newcastle United and West Ham United held an interest in the Bosnian, as well as that teams from Saudi Arabia were keeping an eye on his situation.
But as of yet, nothing has materialised, and Begovic is still waiting to find a new team. It has now come to light that, in addition to being linked with teams such as Newcastle and West Ham, Begovic was also on the radar of Charlton too.
According to Richard Cawley, Begovic was of interest to the Addicks at the start of this summer, but he hasn’t stated whether that interest still exists.
Even at the age of 37, 63-cap Bosnia & Herzegovina international Begovic was a key part of the QPR team in the 2023/24 campaign that survived relegation under Marti Cifuentes, as he played in all but one league game.
During which he conceded 57 goals and kept 13 clean sheets, he played a pivotal role in the club beating the drop to League One.
Last season saw Begovic drop into the Championship after a couple of seasons in the top flight, and it remains to be seen if he would be willing to now drop down a further level into League One.
Whether the goalkeeper is 37 or not, Begovic would be a very impressive addition for Charlton, given the quality he showed last season with QPR.
The Bosnian showed that he is still very much performing at a high level, so if the Addicks could potentially get this transfer over the line, it could make a big difference in where they finish this season.
The concern would be wages, as Begovic would have likely been on decent wages even at QPR, so for any deal to occur, there will likely need to be some compromise on both sides.
