Macauley Bonne is on the verge of completing a return to Charlton Athletic, Football Insider have reported.

The Zimbabwe international was released by Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers earlier in the month having failed to make an impact in the two-and-a-half years he spent at Loftus Road, paving the way for him to find a new club.

And he has now agreed terms with the Addicks, who are the club that sold him to the Hoops back in 2020 for around £2 million.

Bonne joined Charlton in 2019 from Leyton Orient, having been prolific at National League level for the O’s and he managed to net 11 times in 33 second tier outings for Athletic, but was unable to stop them being relegated to League One.

The striker has since struggled at QPR but had a good goalscoring run of form at home-town club Ipswich during a loan spell in 2021-22, although they opted not to sign him on a permanent basis.

Now, Bonne is set to join Charlton and new head coach Dean Holden on a deal until the end of the season, with reports suggesting that he is currently undergoing a medical to finalise the move.

The Verdict

Charlton are lacking in centre-forward options, so a decision to bring Bonne back to the club appears to be a no-brainer.

With Jayden Stockley potentially on the way out of The Valley, it has become important to add to that area of the pitch, and who better than someone who has already proven he knows where the back of the net is at League One level.

Despite his 11 Championship goals for Charlton in the past, Bonne perhaps proved that he wasn’t good enough to be a regular feature for QPR and the step back down to the third tier makes a lot of sense.

Bonne won’t have that much competition to begin with so he could try and really make his mark early, with the goal surely being an extended deal into next season and beyond if he performs well enough.
