Charlton Athletic are interested in signing Sheffield United goalkeeper Adam Davies this summer, according to a report from London News Online, who say the Addicks are looking for some considerable change in their goalkeeping department this summer.
It was a tough season for the club in League One, who battled relegation while twice changing managers during the campaign.
Eventually, the appointment of Nathan Jones in February helped steer the club to safety, and they are now preparing for another season in the third-tier.
This summer will be Jones' first transfer window with Charlton, meaning this a chance for him to put his mark on the squad.
It seems the goalkeeping department is one he is keen to address, and they have now turned their attentions to Sheffield United as they look to do that.
As per this latest update, the Addicks are showing an interest in signing Davies this summer.
The 31-year-old is out of contract with Sheffield United at the end of the month, although the club revealed in their end-of-season retained list that discussions about his future were ongoing.
However, it is now suggested that a planned takeover at Bramall Lane has put those talks on hold and Charlton are looking to move in to sign Davies on a free transfer.
It is thought that the Addicks are keen to sign two goalkeepers this summer, as they revamp their options in that area of the pitch.
Davies himself joined Sheffield United in the 2022 January transfer window, signing from Stoke City.
He has since gone on to make 11 appearances in all competitions for the Blades. His only outing this season came in a League Cup clash with Lincoln City, which his side lost on penalties.
Prior to his time with Stoke and Sheffield United, Davies spent five years with Barnsley, making over 200 appearances for the Tykes.
In the end, Charlton finished this season 16th in the League One table, nine points clear of the relegation zone.
Sheffield United were of course, relegated after just a single season in the Premier League, meaning they are preparing for another spell in the Championship in the coming campaign.
There would arguably be pros and cons to a move to bring Davies to The Valley if Charlton were to do so.
On the one hand, he does have plenty of experience, and could be available on a free transfer, which does make this an affordable deal for them.
Indeed, that could leave funds from the budget available to be invested in other parts of the squad, which could help in their search to strengthen the all-round options that are available to Jones.
However, you imagine if Davies is to move on this summer, he will want to go to a club where he gets the chance to play regularly, having not done so during his time at Sheffield United.
But considering how little football he has played recently, there may be questions about his match sharpness, which could make it a risk to rely on him for that role, especially to begin with.
It is also interesting to note that Charlton are so keen to bring in two goalkeepers this summer, given they already have two under contract in Harry Isted and Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
That may suggest there will be movement out of The Valley in that position too this summer, to make room for those potential incomings.
As a result, the goalkeeping situation at Charlton looks as though it could be well worth keeping an eye on over the course of the next few months.
