Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has warned his Charlton squad that there will be changes in personnel ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Jones arrived at The Valley in February with the club sitting just above the relegation zone in League One. Since then, the Welshman has picked up 22 points from a possible 48 on his way to registering a 16th-place finish in the third tier.

The Addicks put together a 14-game unbeaten run under Jones, consisting of four wins and ten draws, that was ended by Wycombe Wanderers on the final day of the season.

Charlton's charismatic manager felt that the result at Adams Park was a useful reminder of what will be required in the summer to change the club's fortunes next season.

He spoke to Charlton's official X account following the defeat to the Chairboys: "I will change personnel. It's a big summer ahead, and I've just had a reiteration of what we need to do if we want to be a different force next year. We can't be sentimental, we can't be weak, we've got to be bold in what we want to do".

Charlton fans will feel reassured in the knowledge that their manager intends on shaping his own squad of players ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The Addicks' boss alluded to the fact that he felt he had taken the current squad as far as he could, so with the right players at his disposal next term, there is a real possibility that the club will be able to push on under his leadership.

Jones will look to sign at least one goalkeeper this summer, according to Richard Cawley.

The club has released a retained list ahead of the summer, confirming which players will still be contracted at The Valley next season.

The five players currently on loan at Charlton will return to their parent clubs having failed to make a serious impact, while captain George Dobson is set for a move to the Hungarian top flight this summer.

Defender Lucas Ness has had his contract extended by a year and wing-back Thierry Small is in negotiations with the club over a new deal. Dynamic winger Tyreece Campbell has also accepted a contract extension, and it will be interesting to see whether Jones keeps him around the squad or sends him out on loan to gain more first-team experience.

Diallang Jaiyesimi, Jack Payne, and Richard Chin, who spent the season out on loan, have not been offered fresh terms. Connor Wickham and Kazenga LuaLua, who were signed by Jones as free agents during the second half of the season, will also depart the club following the expiration of their short-term deals.

Terell Thomas, Michael Hector, and third choice goalkeeper Lewis Ward are the other players who will be leaving the club this summer. Hector and Thomas were both part of a defence that ranked 23rd for clean sheets in League One.

That leaves Charlton with 23 players contracted for next season. However, there are likely to be more outgoings over the course of the summer.

Scott Fraser and Conor McGrandles, whose contracts come to an end in 2025, will likely be made available for transfer or loaned out once again. A number of those players with a contract for next year, such as Aaron Henry, Zach Mitchell, and Nathan Asiimwe, are likely to be sent on loan.

Jones is now in a position where he can look to add his own players to his Charlton squad, once again giving fans a reason to be hopeful going into a League One season.

It remains to be seen if there will be any interest in Charlton's players. The likes of Alfie May and Miles Leaburn could spark interest, although Jones is highly unlikely to agree to any deals that weaken his squad ahead of the next campaign.

Jones has experience overseeing a clear out

When Jones arrived at Luton Town in January 2016, he guided the club away from the relegation zone in League Two. During the transfer window, his first summer as a manager, he released 12 players and made eight signings. The Hatters went on to lose in the play-offs before winning automatic promotion the following season.

Jones is not a manager who is afraid of making difficult decisions. He will assess his Charlton squad, make the adjustments that he feels are necessary, and begin implementing his brand of high-tempo pressing football ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
