Middlesbrough midfielder Marcus Browne will undergo a medical with League One outfit Charlton Athletic today ahead of a loan switch until the end of the 2021-22 season, per Football Insider.

The same source revealed late last week that the Addicks were set to win the race for the 24-year-old, who had garnered surprise transfer interest from Sheffield United.

However it is Johnnie Jackson’s side who have won the race for the Boro man, who has spent a significant time on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Alan Pardew

Yes No

That occurred in January 2021 in an FA Cup match with Brentford, forcing the attacking midfielder to miss a whole year of action.

And he is not in Chris Wilder’s plans at the Riverside this season, with the recently appointed Middlesbrough boss putting the ex-West Ham United man up for transfer and suggested a permanent exit was possible.

It will only be a temporary move for Browne though and it will take Charlton’s number of loan players in their squad up to five when his switch is confirmed.

The Verdict

It’s a surprise that Browne is set to go out on loan considering Chris Wilder did not expect him to be back on the pitch until March.

But even if that’s the case, Browne could offer something different to what Charlton already have in the final third even if it is just for the final two months of the League One season.

The third tier is a level that Browne has excelled at in the past with Oxford United and perhaps this move is one he needs to get his confidence back after a long time away from football.

Perhaps a strong level of performance could see him impress Wilder and get back in his plans at the Riverside, but it’s more likely that it will be a platform to see Browne permanently make a move in the summer.
