Wigan secured a comfortable 5-1 victory over their non-league opponents as they stepped up their preparations for the 2022/23 campaign.

Wyke, who played in the first-half of this game, suffered a cardiac arrest during a training session in November.

The forward went on to miss the remainder of the season as Wigan secured promotion to the Championship.

Before his collapse, Wyke managed to score five goals and provide two assists for his team-mates in 15 league appearances.

With Wigan set to face Preston North End on July 30th, Wyke will be aiming to force his way into contention for a starting role in this fixture by producing some positive performances during pre-season.

Making reference to his return to action on Instagram, the forward has admitted that it was an amazing feeling to be back playing again for Wigan.

Wyke posted: “What a feeling to be back on a football pitch. I never thought I would get the chance to play again & it’s been incredibly tough but to be back out there with the lads after 8 months is a amazing feeling!

Still a way to go yet but another step in the right direction & looking forward to getting fitter and stronger over the next few weeks ready for the start of the season.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me get this far & thank you for all the messages they really mean a lot.”

The Verdict

Given that there were doubts regarding whether Wyke would ever play again for Wigan following his collapse last year, everyone associated with the club will be delighted that he was able to feature yesterday.

Providing that the forward returns to full fitness in the coming weeks, there is every chance that he will be given the chance to impress in the opening stages of the new term.

Although it may take Wyke some time to adapt to life in the Championship due to the fact that he has never played at this level during his career, there is no reason why he cannot eventually go on to excel at this level.

By learning from the guidance of manager Leam Richardson, the forward may be able to rediscover his best form in the not-too-distant future.
