Manchester United midfielder Charlie Savage has confirmed his decision to not join up with Wales’ Under-21s squad and to instead stay with Forest Green Rovers.

Savage has been on loan at the League One club and recently scored his first senior goal for the side.

Savage was the sole goalscorer for Forest in a 3-1 defeat against Bristol Rovers.

The academy graduate’s showings earned him a Welsh U-21 call-up but according to the player, he will not take up the opportunity.

The 19-year-old has instead elected to remain with Forest Green to help them fight for points and avoid relegation.

Forest Green currently sit bottom of the table, with seven points separating them and Cambridge United.

Upon making the decision, Savage said via United club media, “I’ve been given permission to stay with Forest Green Rovers for the upcoming international break.

“It is always an honour to be called up for your country, wearing the national team shirt is one of the best and proudest experiences you can have in football.

“I’m really enjoying my time with Forest Green and want to give everything to help us fight for points during the next two weeks and then into the remainder of the season.”

Savage added that he did not come to the decision easily.

He thought and pondered about it for a long time before finally arriving at a final determination.

Savage conveyed that his decision was primarily motivated by his eagerness to repay the faith that has been placed in him by the manager, his coaching staff and his teammates.

The United man rounded off his statement by saying, “I want to thank the coaches and everyone at FA Wales for their understanding and I look forward to joining up with them again at the end of the season.”
