This summer was always going to be one of upheaval at Manchester City. It became apparent midway through the 24/25 season that the end of an era had arrived. But as the page turned on Manchester City’s era of dominance at the end of last season, a new chapter is underway at the club. Manchester City are wasting no time building for their next era of dominance. That is clear to see based on the moves the club is making so far this summer.

Manchester City is wasting no time refreshing the entire club this summer.

It was expected that new players would arrive at Manchester City this summer. That process began last night as Manchester City’s signing of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolverhampton Wanderers was confirmed. It is also expected that the signings of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan, Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea will be confirmed today. Kevin De Bruyne and Scott Carson’s departures from the club have already been confirmed. So the squad rebuild at City is underway. Off the pitch, there is a refreshment of Pep Guardiola’s staff that is also taking shape.

Manchester City have announced that assistant coaches Juanma Lillo, Inigo Dominguez and Carlos Vicens will all leave the club. Rob Dawson has reported for ESPN that Jurgen Klopp’s long-time assistant manager, Pep Lijnders, will join Pep Guardiola’s staff this summer. The addition of Lijnders will give Pep Guardiola a new assistant coach to work with. Guardiola will be able to tap into Lijnders’ knowledge of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool system to find fresh ideas for his new-look Manchester City side. There will be further assistant coaches who arrive at City to continue this process. All told, there is a sense that a new beginning is unfolding at the Etihad.

The Club World Cup does represent the beginning of a new era at the club.

Manchester City will begin their FIFA Club World Cup campaign next week. The tournament represents the first step of a new beginning at the club. They will have the opportunity to work together for the first time at the tournament. The merits of the expanded Club World Cup can be debated. But from a City point of view, it is an opportunity for the new faces at City to bed into Pep Guardiola’s system. Given that Manchester City’s pre-season will be interrupted, the opportunity for the new City players and staff to work together in a high-pressure environment could prove to be invaluable.
