We’re edging into the final quarter of the 2023/24 Championship season, and the race for the Golden Boot is hotting up.

The race for the Golden Boot, awarded to the Championship’s top scorer, is always a fascinating and unpredictable battle. Last season, Chuba Akpom emerged as the top scorer, a surprise for many bookmakers who had not even priced him in the top scorer market at the start of the season. This unpredictability makes it difficult to be supremely confident in any top scorer odds, but there are some intriguing angles to consider.

Since 2020, only 25% of players who scored 10 or more goals in the Championship were new signings that season. The majority of top scorers tend to be players who have already been with their respective clubs for some time, showcasing the importance of familiarity and understanding with the team’s style of play.

Another interesting trend to consider is that the top scorers often play for clubs that perform well in the league. Since 2013/14, no player has won the Golden Boot from a club that finished outside the top six. This suggests that the top scorers often play crucial roles in their team’s success and are the focal point of their team’s attacking efforts.

However, at the moment that is being blown out of the water. The top two scorers in the Championship play for teams in the bottom half of the table, with Sammie Szmodics’ Blackburn in 16th and Morgan Whittaker’s Plymouth 15th. While Plymouth enjoy the higher ground in the table, it is Szmodics who leads the way in the Golden Boot race with 17 goals to Whittaker’s 16.

Whittaker is also joined on 16 goals by Adam Armstrong, who is leading the charge for Southampton to gain immediate promotion back into the Premier League. One other player has reached at least 15 for the season, with Crysencio Summerville doing so to help Leeds up to second with 12 games left to play.

Overall, 13 different players have scored at least 10 goals in the Championship this season, with Leeds having three on double figures — the most of any club.

But, who makes the top 10 as things stand?
