Championship: Birmingham hit Reading for four to keep promotion hopes alive | OneFootball

Despite being fifth in the Barclays Women’s Championship table, Birmingham City still have promotion in their sights. The Blues earned a big three points over Reading when they travelled to the Select Car Leasing Stadium for a midweek clash.

Birmingham cruised to a 4-0 win on Wednesday, while the Royals continue to search for important points to hoist their position up the table.

Starting XIs

Reading FC: Orman; Dugdale, Stapleton, Houssein, Smith, Perry, Wade, Flannery, Mayi Kith, Estcourt, Longhurst.

Birmingham City: Thomas; Lo, Quinn, Lawley, Smith, Agg, Holloway, Cho, Walker, Devlin, Moore, Herron.

First Half

After just two minutes, the Blues came close with Walker’s long-range effort hitting the crossbar. Less than ten minutes later they secured the lead. Some fast-paced passing inside the box saw Agg set up Moore, who fired into the net.

Another unlucky spell for Birmingham City saw Smith hit the post, intercepting a loose pass to Orman. Despite the calm play out from the Reading backline, the Blues made it two after only 29 minutes. A precise pass across the goal from Herron allowed Smith to slot it calmly past the Reading goalkeeper.

However, the Royals also came close to scoring, with Perry connecting well with a long ball over the backline.

The half-time whistle saw Birmingham City 2-0 to the good. They lead comfortably at the break, showcasing their strength in attack and possession play.

Second Half

The Blues started the second half dominantly, driving to create more chances in the final third. Within ten minutes, they made it three. This time, Agg put herself on the scoresheet after a good shift in the box.

Despite the Royals’ efforts and attempts to counter, Agg made it four on 79 minutes. Herron’s deep cross across the goal gifted the youngster her brace. In the last minute of the game, Quinn was denied a class strike from distance by the hands of Orman.

Turning focus to the weekend

With a disappointing result, the Royals will have their eyes on three points this Sunday. They will travel to Bramall Lane to take on Sheffield United.

The Blues will take on Blackburn Rovers on home soil this weekend. With four goals scored against Reading, Birmingham will certainly feel confident as they continue to push for promotion.
