A heavy defeat to Arsenal on Tuesday night has put Mauricio Pochettino’s future back into major doubt, and the list of candidates to replace him is only growing shorter.

It’s going to be a summer where many top clubs change managers, and Chelsea are no longer one of the most attractive gigs in town. All signs indicate they will wait until the end of the season to assess whether Mauricio Pochettino will keep his job or not, but even that is a risky move given some of the best potential replacements for the Argentine could be off the market by then.

Ruben Amorim is already meeting teams ahead of his expected departure from Sporting CP this summer, and Liverpool look to be closing in on their chosen Jurgen Klopp successor too. It will all happen very fast, and Chelsea don’t want to be left behind.

The Times have today reported that former Bayern Munich and German coach Hansi Flick is one of the big names on our list as a potential replacement. But their report says he isn’t convinced about taking the job.

Other names mentioned in the Times’ report include Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi. But it will be the same problem with each of them. While they will certainly consider coming to take the Chelsea job, they won’t do it until they see what else they are offered first. Chelsea is no longer a top tier option for a coach – before you had a great chance to win things and a great chance of getting sacked. Now it’s just the latter without the former.

It’s going to be very hard to decide whether to sack Pochettino when there is so little certainty about who might be willing to replace him. At some point, we’re going to have to just take the plunge.
