Another captivating season of Champions League football came to an end in Madrid on Saturday night.
Liverpool lifted the big trophy for the sixth time with a win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Their stars feature heavily in our team of the season, but who joins them?
If it wasn’t for him, Liverpool wouldn’t have won it. His excellent last gasp save in the group stage against Arkadiusz Milik kept his side in the competition and he went from strength to strength after that massive moment.
When you look back on Liverpool’s winning season, one moment stands out alone and it was the youngster’s speed of thought and ingenuity with his corner kick that completed the comeback against Barcelona but even outside of that, he was phenomenal all year.
The man is simply imperious. You could make a case that if you take anyone else out of this side, they may still get the job done but not without the Dutch destroyer. He’s the world’s best centre-back and now has the medal to prove it.
Van Dijk isn’t the only dominant Dutchman at the heart of a defence to be excited about. De Ligt skippered Ajax to within seconds of a Champions League final at the age of just 19. Not just a supreme defender, he showed his ability at the other end with some key goals too.
Costly missed chances at Anfield aside, Alba still had a fantastic individual campaign for the Blaugrana. His chemistry with Lionel Messi is a joy to watch and no player had more assists that him in the competition this season with five.
Arguably the most improved player anywhere in European football. The energy, spirit and drive that he gives Mauricio Pochettino’s men was a massive factor in their run to the final. Always there for his team in the big moments.
The beautiful beating heart of Manchester City’s midfield. He carried his outstanding Premier League form over onto the continental stage and was a consistently impressive performer across his eight appearances in the competition.
Based on his performances in the Champions League, there are absolutely no concerns about how he will fare at Barcelona. In intimidating away games at Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus and Spurs, he bossed it with a combination of steel and style.
One of the best individual outings of the campaign came with his majestic display at the Santiago Bernabéu filled with flicks and tricks. That was the cherry on top for him in the Champions League, ending the competition with six goals and four assists.
He promised at the start of the year he’d bring back the Champions League and it certainly wasn’t for want of trying on his part. Twelve goals and three assists are proof that he did everything in his power but was let down elsewhere. His semi-final performance and free-kick against Liverpool were stunning.
The South Korean gives so much to this Spurs team beyond just goals. His movement is a nightmare to deal with, as Manchester City found out, in addition to his pace and composure in front of goal. Single-handedly put Pep Guardiola’s men to the sword.
