Inter Milan welcome Liverpool to San Siro for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie on Wednesday night.

The Nerazzurri have recently stumbled in Serie A with back-to-back winless games against AC Milan and Napoli, and are currently second in the standings.

The holders still have the slender advantage as they are one point behind leaders Milan with a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s side are nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City with a game in hand.

The Merseyside giants are in a fine run of form ahead of the midweek trip to San Siro, having won their last six matches across all competitions.

Past meetings

The clubs have previously met on four occasions in Europe. Inter had the better of the Reds by a 4-3 aggregate scoreline during the 1965 European Cup semi-final.

In 2008, Liverpool got their revenge in the round of 16 with a 3-0 aggregate win that included a 1-0 triumph at San Siro. Inter had a player sent off in both legs.

Team news

Inter don’t have any fresh injury concerns. They will be without Joaquin Correa and Robin Gosens (both hamstring). Nicolo Barella will be a big miss in midfield following his sending-off against Real Madrid.

Liverpool are also well placed for the European encounter. Divock Origi and Joe Gomez have been out of action, with the former not playing since December. However, both players have returned to training and could make the matchday squad.

The hosts are better placed in their domestic standings compared to the visitors, but there have been cracks visible in their backline in recent matches. They have failed to keep a clean sheet for the past three league games, dropping five points in the process.
