Inter experienced one of the biggest setbacks of their season to date on Tuesday.

The Nerazzurri’s 1-0 loss to German champions Bayer Leverkusen has hardly left their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League round of sixteen teetering.

However, it was an opportunity to take a big step towards the knockouts. Even a draw would have seen Inter plant one foot in the round of sixteen.

That would have taken a lot of the importance of upcoming matches against Sparta Prague and Monaco away.

Alas, Inter will have work to do in January. They’ve tasted defeat and conceded a goal for the first time in Europe this campaign.

The Nerazzurri have another few weeks to go before they think about the Champions League again, though.

There is a much more pressing matter at hand.

Next Monday, Inter face Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico. They go into the match level on points with the Biancocelesti, albeit with a game in hand.

There is a feeling that the match will have real Serie A title ramifications. Not just for Inter and Lazio – Atalanta, Napoli, and Fiorentina will certainly be paying close attention at the very least.

Therefore, Monday’s match is the only thing Inter are thinking about now.

Regrets about the performance and result in Germany are not colouring Inter’s mood.

The Nerazzurri don’t feel that they have to respond to what happened on Tuesday. They just need to treat Lazio as their own challenge, and do everything they can to get the job done.
