Club Brugge has received sixty million euros from Champions League revenues, but is that good? As per Voetbal International and Het Nieuwsblad, Belgian economist Wim Lagae had his doubts.
With five wins and two draws, Club Brugge ended up in the Champions League round of 16, before losing to Aston Villa. As a result of their tournament progress, UEFA have reportedly transferred approximately sixty million euros to the Belgians.
While it’s a magnificent amount, Lagae foresees problems. “The European football association UEFA is promoting inequality in our football with its gigantic bonus system.”
“It’s bizarre that Club Brugge suddenly earns sixty million euros for its Champions League campaign. This disrupts the balance of our national competition. That is also the reason that the top clubs wanted more space on the calendar around European matches: those prize pools have increased much faster than all the budgets in the Jupiler Pro League.
“It would be better if UEFA gives a much larger part of that prize money to clubs that do not play in Europe. I fear that the gap between the top and the smaller clubs will grow.”
