UEFA has decided to hold the 2021-22 Champions league final - previously slated for the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg - at the Stade de France in Paris on 28 May 2022.

In light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, European football's governing body UEFA has opted to move this season's Champions League final to the Stade de France in the northern suburbs of Paris. Announced on Friday morning, the move will see the 2022 UEFA Champions League final played at the stadium that also hosted the 2000 and 2006 finals, the Euro 2016 final and, of course, France's victorious World Cup final back in 1998.

The reasons for UEFA's choice of France's premier football arena as the staging ground for the final were many, chief among them its not having hosted any Euro 2020 matches in a tournament that was played all over Europe. Also, the support of France and its president Emmanuel Macron for UEFA in the face of the Super League controversy in spring 2021. Furthermore, given the likelihood of an English side's being in the final - Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and holders Chelsea are all in the last 16 - Paris's easy accessibility for UK fans will be a huge asset.
