Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta admits he is frustrated and baffled by the club’s inconsistency after winning the title.

The Blues lifted the Premier League trophy in 2015 and 2017 but struggled in the season’s that followed, finishing a lowly 10th in 2016 before failing to reach the Champions League last season.

The Spanish defender insists he wants the west London side to ‘always’ be at the top but admits he doesn’t understand their failings.

“It is difficult to explain.” he told the Daily Mirror. “We have been the club in England that has won the most trophies in the last couple of years.

“We are Chelsea we are fighting for trophies and we have to be up there and it is frustrating when you see we are able to win the title and then the next year we are not.

“I would like to be at the top always. It is difficult but it is our job and we have to try to do it.”

As the patten suggests, after last season’s difficulties, Chelsea have started brightly under manager Maurizio Sarri and are two points off the top after nine matches.

The Blues face Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.
