Barcelona opened up a six-point lead atop LaLiga with a narrow win over Girona thanks to an inspired substitute turn from Pedri.
Scorers: Pedri 61′
Xavi made four changes from the midweek win over Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey and with Robert Lewandowski still banned for LaLiga action, they were largely blunt in attack throughout a scoreless first half.
The only significant moment of that spell came when Ousmane Dembélé picked up an apparent hamstring injury which saw him substituted, although early indications are that it should not be too serious.
And it was his replacement who ultimately came up with the decisive moment of the game shortly after the hour mark.
Pedri marked his 100th appearance in the red and blue by turning home from close range for the winner after being set up by fellow substitute Jordi Alba.
With three minutes remaining, Girona missed a glorious chance to level it from inside the six-yard box as Xavi’s side made the most of that reprieve to see things out for the victory and put the pressure on Real Madrid ahead of their meeting with Real Sociedad on Sunday.
