Celtic FC Women were held to a 0-0 draw against Hibernian on Friday evening, playing out a stalemate at the Albert Bartlett Stadium.

The Celts had chances throughout the match, but just couldn’t quite find the breakthrough after a competitive 90 minutes of action.

Following another comprehensive victory against Aberdeen last weekend in the first away game of the campaign, the Ghirls were back in action at the Albert Bartlett Stadium on Friday evening.

Facing off against Hibernian, the Edinburgh side have kicked off the season strongly, also winning their opening four matches.

The Celts made a bright start to proceedings, with Murphy Agnew looking to threaten in behind the away defence and be a constant thorn in their side.

The first chance of the game almost fell the way of the American, who tried to press the goalkeeper into a mistake at the back. However, the Hibs number one got the luck of the bounce.

As the game grew on, both sides had half chances, with Celtic enjoying the vast majority in the first 45 minutes.

The away side did force Kelsey Daugherty into a big save as she dived across to her right to tip a header from close range over the crossbar.

Both Mathilde Carstens and Chloe Craig had attempts at goal, which were comfortable for the goalkeeper. But the best chance of the half came just moments before the break.

After a busy first half, Agnew thought she had handed Celtic the lead, meeting Jenny Smith’s cross into the area.

However, the forward was extremely unfortunate not to find the bottom corner, seeing her first time strike come off the inside of the post before being cleared to safety.

It was much the same pattern of game heading into the second half, with Celtic continuing to make chances and probing for the opening goal.

Early in the second half, Mathilde Carstens looked to take advantage after pressing the opposition into a mistake. But she just couldn’t quite keep her effort on target.

Introducing some chances to the game, Kit Loferski was instantly aiming to use her pace to cause trouble in behind.

At the other end, Daugherty had to stay strong to deny the away side on a few occasions, and the American stood strong to keep her clean sheet intact.

Going into the dying moments of the game, Celtic continued to push in an attempt to score that all important goal. But it just wouldn’t fall their way in the closing stages.

Next up for the Ghirls is a short break from domestic action as they travel to Lithuania for Round One of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
