Celtic v Ferencvaros – The New Celtic Captain is the Last Man Standing

Callum McGregor will be the ONLY Celtic player thing the field today who also played against Ferencvaros in the Champions League qualifier behind closed doors at Celtic Park at the start of last season. That really does show the incredible transformation that has happened at the club since that behind closed doors defeat to today’s visitors.

Maybe the now Celtic captain will have revenge on his mind, that was a game that Celtic really should have won but with Odsonne Edouard, who scored against Arsenal for Crystal Palace last night, refusing to play hours before kick-off we had Ryan Christie playing up top and missed a series of chances then through in some comical defending with Elhamed the biggest culprit.

You have to look at the coaching staff too. In the match that Ferencvaros won to get through to face Celtic their main threat came from a pacy left winger with an eye for goal. After watching the match videos in advance we were busy urging Celtic to play Jeremie Frimpong at right-back to counter the pace of the Ferencvaros forward but somehow the Celtic coaching staff missed that and opted to play the unsettled Elhamed.

Afterwards an angry Neil Lennon let rip on the behind the scenes issues at the club and the group of players who become known as the Want Aways. “I have no idea on that one,” Lennon said. “But there are some players who may want to leave and have made inroads into that over the last six months or so.

“If they don’t want to be here, we have to do something about it. If they are making waves to leave the club they are obviously not committed. I’m putting it out there because it has been bugging me for a long time.”

“I’m angry, frustrated, disappointed,” the then Celtic manager added. “All those and more. I have to take the responsibility for this result. It’s the first time we’ve gone out so early for 15 years, so that’s on me.

“But there’s no excuse for this result. We have to apologise to the supporters and make the best of what’s left to us this season.”

The starting eleven was Barkas, Elhamed, Jullien, Ajer, Taylor, Brown, McGregor, Forrest, Ntcham, Elyounoussi and Christie.

Today the Celtic team is likely to be Hart, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt, Montgomery, McGregor, Turnbull, Rogic, Abada, Kyogo and Jota.

That’s an incredible turn-around in just 14 months. And of course Neil Lennon is also gone, replaced by Ange Postecoglou.

Today the Hungarians will be facing a very different Celtic, in more ways that one.
