As Celtic prepare to celebrate another Premiership title in Paradise, Callum McGregor is gearing up to lift the league trophy for the fourth consecutive time.
For the Celtic captain, it’s a moment to savour – but there’s still work to do on the pitch before the celebrations can truly begin, with the Champions taking on St Mirren (KO: 12.30pm).
“Obviously, it’s amazing,” McGregor told Celtic TV. “We play football to win things and when you get the build-up to these types of days, it’s special.
"But the focus is on the game first. After the final whistle, then everyone can celebrate.
"Hopefully, the supporters will come and enjoy the day, the game, and hopefully, we’ll put on a show and once the final whistle goes, we can have that moment where everyone’s a champion again and we get to lift the trophy, which is always a huge honour anyway.”
For McGregor, the moment of holding the trophy aloft is always a special one – even after four consecutive seasons of doing so as captain.
“We obviously get used to it because we’ve won quite a few,” he said.
“But that moment when you actually get your hands on the trophy – it’s incredible.
"You know you’re a champion, but to actually lift it, surrounded by your team-mates, with that party atmosphere in the stadium – that’s the culmination of everything you’ve worked hard for.”
McGregor also took a moment to reflect on his friend and team-mate, James Forrest, who recently became Celtic’s most decorated player with 26 major honours – two more than McGregor himself.
“What’s amazing is the fact James and I have come through the Academy,” McGregor said.
“For any of the young lads watching, they now see the platform you can have and what you can actually go on to achieve.
"The Lisbon Lions felt like myths and legends that you could never get close to, and now James and I are in that bracket. We’ve been really successful Celtic players and now it feels normal.
'If I win another one and another one, then the numbers just keep going. It helps normalise it for me and James. Hopefully, now the next guys coming through will see that as well.'
“James has been an unbelievable servant for the club. Legend is the term we can use for him because he is out there on his own.
"Even the other night, his level of performance was so, so high. He helps the team so much. It could not happen to a better guy.
'He’s so humble, the way he lives his life and the way he goes about his business. He is just the perfect example for young guys to follow.'
One of those youngsters hoping to follow in Forrest and McGregor’s footsteps is 17-year-old Sean McArdle, who has impressed in his recent appearances.
“He’s got all the tools,” McGregor said. “He’s super comfortable on the ball.
"That’s the bit you have to have to play at this level, to play Champions League level for Celtic. You have to be able to handle the ball and for someone so young to come in and show that personality and authority when he comes on.
“Everything is clean, he’s got a picture of what the game should look like.
'He’s only been training with us for probably a few months now but he’s picked it up really quickly, which shows he’s intelligent as well.'
“It’s early doors but he's certainly someone who has all the tools. He’s a really nice boy, quiet, does the work and no fuss.
"He’s got the perfect template as well. As much as we can help him to continue to grow and get better he is only 17.
“He’s got so much time and that is on his side. If he continues to keep his head down and keep working hard, then he has a real chance because he’s certainly a special talent.”
As McGregor looks ahead to another Trophy Day, there is also the prospect of closing out the season in perfect fashion – with another domestic treble.
Celtic face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final next week, aiming to add yet another piece of silverware to an already bulging trophy cabinet.
“This is the standard we want to set,” McGregor stated. “We want to try and win everything we’re in.
"Cup finals bring their own challenges, but if we focus on our game and do what we know we can do, we give ourselves every chance.
"To win a sixth treble would be an incredible achievement, but the focus is on making sure we get the job done.”
