Celtic were dealt an early blow when Kyogo Furuhashi was forced off with a shoulder injury after a collision with John Lundstram. Georgios Giakoumakis came off the bench to replace him.

But the hosts soon took the lead, when Jota’s quick throw-in was flicked on and deflected into the path of Liel Abada, whose low shot crept past Jon McLauchlin for 1-0.

Rangers went in search of an equaliser but it was the Hoops who struck again, when Matt O’Riley played Jota in behind the defence with a brilliant pass before the Portuguese delightfully dinked the ball over McLaughlin for 2-0.

And Celtic Park erupted again when Abada scored his second of the game to make it 3-0 five minutes before half-time with a powerful strike through McLaughlin’s legs.

An already emphatic scoreline then became a rout when John Turnbull got in on the act it make it 4-0 after McLaughlin had inexplicably passed the ball straight to him.

Both sides get their Champions League campaigns under way next, with Celtic hosting Real Madrid on Tuesday and Rangers travelling to Ajax on Wednesday.
