Celtic release statement after SPFL announce sanction

For quite some time now, Celtic have been facing issues when it comes to the actions of a section of their supporters which has led to fines for the club. Most of these have come at the European level. Of course, many will remember how there were fears that the club's fans might be banned from attending the away leg against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Fortunately, that did not happen.

On the other hand, the Hoops have gotten into trouble at the domestic level recently as well. Celtic, Rangers and Motherwell were charged by the SPFL after both semi-finals at the national stadium were disrupted.

An independent panel has ordered that 500 tickets be removed from each club's allocation. Also, there will be a further deduction should there be future incidents.

Celtic have released a statement on their official website following this decision from the SPFL. It reads:

"Celtic Football Club notes today’s SPFL judgement relating to the use of pyrotechnics at matches.Clearly, it is hugely disappointing that our wider support will be negatively affected at future SPFL League Cup matches at Hampden following the actions of a small minority. It is well known that we also currently face a UEFA suspended sentence as a result of the previous use of pyrotechnics, most recently at the match against Borussia Dortmund, by a small minority of supporters – something which could potentially have a negative and damaging impact on the team and Celtic supporters wishing to attend an away match in UEFA competition to support the team. The Club has been very clear that the use of fireworks and pyrotechnics at matches is illegal, and presents risks to supporter safety and to the Club under the applicable regulations. The fact that the use of pyrotechnics by a small minority is now adversely affecting the attendance of our supporters at matches should act as a very serious wake-up call to those involved. "

The club have been trying to deal with this for quite some time now but have not been successful so far. It remains to be seen if anything will change as a result of this recent sanction.

In the grand scheme of things, 500 tickets is not a large portion of the allocation. That being said, that is still 500 Celtic fans who could have enjoyed the game and a potential experience of a lifetime has been taken away from them.

Of course, the focus will have to turn towards the pitch soon. Celtic still have two trophies to compete for this season.

They have a 16-point lead in the league and are almost at the finish line. They just now have to cross it and become champions of Scotland for the fourth consecutive time. On the other hand, they are also looking to defend the Scottish Cup and face Hibernian in the quarter-finals.
