After Liel Abada spurned a glorious early chance by bundling over after being teed up by Jota, Matt O’Riley was then denied by a combination of defender and post with a superb half-volley from range.

Just as frustrations began to set in for the champions, an incisive pass from Reo Hatate shortly before the break freed the lively Sead Hakšabanović in the area and his thunderous low delivery was diverted by Andy Considine into his own net.

Five minutes after the restart, Giorgos Giakoumakis was denied a second with a diving header by a dubious offside flag before Abada again missed when in one-on-one after deft work by Hakšabanović to send him through.

Those misses came close to haunting Celtic when substitute Stevie May was sent racing through by the Saints but his low effort was steered onto the post by a low save from the under-fire Joe Hart and with three minutes remaining, Connor McLennan spurned an even bigger chance at the far post when he blazed over with the goal gaping.

Celtic failed to heed those warnings and appeared to have thrown away two points when Alex Mitchell steered a loose ball in from a free-kick in the area to stun the leaders.

However, they responded to win it in incredible fashion when James McCarthy fed Alexandro Bernabei down the left and he picked out Giakoumakis in the centre to bundle in a close range winner and restore his side’s five-point lead at the top.
