Celtic FC Women return to SWPL1 action this afternoon with a visit to Petershill Park to face a Partick Thistle side who lie eighth in the table and returned to post winter break action with a creditable draw against Motherwell last weekend.

Fran Alonso’s side meanwhile started their return to action when conceding a poorly defended late goal to draw away to Hibs last weekend, in a game where they had enough chances to score more than enough to emerge with a win.

HERE’S TODAY’S TEAM NEWS…

Celtic seems to have adopted a media black-out policy on the Celtic FC Women side since returning from the winter break, with the League Cup already in the trophy cabinet. So giving you an insight into what Fran Alonso or his players are thinking about of today’s game has not been possible. Nor is there any injury updates or the usual sort of stuff that engaged supporters want to know about the team ahead of a game.

Back to the game last weekend against Hibs, there was an element of rustiness to that performance, but there were also a great deal of positives to take, particularly in the performances of both Jacynta and Mengyu Shen who were creative throughout but found the chances they created, bar a fine finish from the ever reliable and lethal Charlie Wellings, could not be converted into goals.

Celtic certainly remedied that in midweek as they saw off lower league side Edinburgh City in the Scottish Cup – to set up a next round tie with league leaders theRangers – with an incredible 12-0 win.

Charlie Wellings scored five of those goals to make up for some of the uncharacteristic profligacy in front of goal from the weekend draw with Hibs. With an incredible 22 goals in just 20 games for Celtic it is likely, now the winter break cobwebs have been brushed away with that incredible goal haul against City, that Partick Thistle may be somewhat concerned this afternoon. And so they should be.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST TIME CELTIC PLAYED GLASGOW CITY…

Celtic have little margin for error when it comes to dropped points for the rest of the season, as they chase a Glasgow City side lying in second place by five points and the leaders by seven points.

As such Celtic know they are to all intents and purposes attempting to go on a long unbeaten run now and force some pressure on the sides above them in the table – with plenty of goals along the way just as vital to eat into the issue of goal difference, something in the SWPL1 vital to any title challenge.

And that starts today with a winnable tie against an opponent lying near the foot of the table and one who has already conceded 32 goals in just 12 games this season. For a Celtic team looking to get back to winning ways and mount a serious title challenge, today’s opponents offer the perfect opportunity to get three points and to grab some goals into the bargain.
